Designed by Riddles, this was based on a Hunslet Class 50550 design and 391 were built for the government during the Second World War , using various locomotive builders. A further 93 were built for other customers. J94 was applied as a class code to the 75 locomotives bought by the LNER after the war and which passed to BR in 1948. Many others were sold to the National Coal Board and to private industry. Their high power and short wheelbase made them versatile machines. Of the 484 built, 70 are still in existence.
